Aging - By the Numbers

  • We are experiencing a revolution in longevity. In the past century, the industrialized world has gained some 30 years of life expectancy, greater than had been attained during the preceding 5,000 years. (Anti-ageism Taskforce of the International Longevity Center - USA, 2006)
  • Americans are living longer than ever before. People who live to 65 can expect to live an average of nearly 18 more years. The life expectancy of people who live to 85 is another seven years. (Federal Interagency Forum on Aging-Related Statistics, 2004)
  • Approximately 60 percent of Americans who live to 65 will need long-term care at some time in their lives. (American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, 2006)
  • People with positive perceptions about aging live an average of 7.5 years longer than those with negative images of growing older. (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, B.R. Levy, M.D., 2002)
